- The Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546 - 1601) discovered in 1572 a new naked-
- eye star in the constellation Cassiopeia. It was actually the first new star
- (supernova) seen with the naked eye since 134 BC, and appeared to be brighter
- than Venus. Because the supernova was observed in many locations all over
- Europe, Brahe deduced that it must be positioned beyond the Moon. This was a
- revolutionary thought, since the Aristotelian view stated that the space beyond
- the Moon was stationary, and no new stars could be created there.

- BACK TO GEOCENTRIC WORLD
-
- In Tycho Brahe's conception of the universe the Earth was once again the centre,
- around which the Sun and the Moon orbited. However, Mercury, Venus, Mars,
- Jupiter and Saturn orbited the Sun. Tycho's universe was very much like that of
- Hipparchus'.
